I saw the weirdest thing during out trip to Maui this year.  My husband and I haven't been to Hawaii in years, and we thought this would be a good time to go, now that our youngest is in college.  So we packed our bags and boarded a flight across the ocean.  They say the first thing you notice when you get there is the strong smell of flowers in the air, and believe me, that's true.  Well, we hoped in a cab to take us to our hotel.  We rested that evening, but the next day we woke up early to catch a van that took us up the side of a giant mountain, which was actually a semi dormant volcano.  Is "Semi" supposed to make one feel better?  Yikes!

When we got to the top, I noticed a young girl, maybe in her twenties, doing what looked to be some kind of sacred dance around the lip of the volcano.  Steam and gasses were rising out of it.  You could see magma brewing under the surface a little.  The woman spun and turned and twirled.  After some leap and jumping, the lady reached into a cardboard box and pulled out what looked to me to be some kind of maxi dress.  It looked like this, actually.  Dresses are common on the Hawaiian archipelago, but one rarely sees one tossed into the earth's molten core!  For a second, I thought she was going to jump in herself, and that almost gave yours truly a heart attack.  But it became clear she was sacrificing her favorite maxi dress to the Gods.  For what reason, I don't know?  She was praying, obviously, so I didn't want to interrupt her.  Besides, my ice cream cone was melting and I wanted to finish it before it dripped all over my dress.  Oh, the horror that would be, right girls?

On the way back to the spa, I asked my hubbie what he thought about all that shenanigans.  He said that that some natives are superstitious, and they believe that if they sacrifice a beautiful girls maxi dress to the deities, they will be rewarded with even more stunning maxis the next season.  I was like, "seriously?  That doesn't sound right to me."  But my man is never wrong.  He says so all the time, so I am inclined to believe him.  We later when on the interwebs to research maxi dresses for girls, to see if anyone else had witnessed this during their vacation.   I didn't get to the bottom of that mystery, but I did find a pretty cool website that sold these girls dresses.  This is a link that will take you there, if you want to see for yourself.  Wowza!
